As a Staff Writer, you will have a passion for creating a delightful experience for Ballotpedia’s customers, and you will strive to develop expertise in your subject and the inner workings of your project. To understand the type of subject-matter expertise you will be expected to acquire, please read some recent editions of The Tap, Ballotpedia’s weekly email.
It is the job of the Staff Writer to develop and improve information on the project on which they work. We are currently seeking Staff Writers for our State Executives Project, which is contained within our State Desk, and for the Congressional Project on our Federal Desk. It is possible that Staff Writer opportunities in other projects will become available in the coming weeks, and we may consider applicants from this posting for those opportunities as well.
You must be a self-motivated, organized, computer-savvy individual with a fact-based, yet engaging writing style and an impeccable attention to detail. You will be able to communicate clearly, be open to critique and collaboration, and be able to complete both repetitive tasks and more complex research assignments in a timely manner.
You will have the experience that enables you to communicate complex trends and opinions in a neutral, clear and concise manner and have a propensity for innovation and flexibility. To succeed in this position, you will demonstrate excellent writing, organizational skills, proofreading ability and familiarity with the use of style guides. You will also excel in the identification of big picture trends, have a keen eye for developing stories, and have good judgement in deciding what stories will become newsworthy.

- Bachelor’s degree (political science, journalism, English, or humanities degrees are preferred, but not required)
- One to two years of writing, editing, research, or academic experience preferred, but not required
- Remote working experience preferred, but not required
The Staff Writer will work remotely from their home location. All Ballotpedia staff work remotely. To join Ballotpedia, you must have a computer with Internet access. Ballotpedia uses Google Applications (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive and more) to accomplish our goals. Some familiarity with Google Applications is helpful.
Ballotpedia is a results-only work environment (ROWE). A ROWE is a workplace in which every employee is 100% accountable to the results and 100% autonomous over their time. ROWE workplaces have been shown to provide better service to the ultimate customer of the business while also improving employee engagement and work satisfaction. Each employee will be oriented to the principles of a ROWE during new employee training.
Ballotpedia’s editorial compensation is based on a scale, which can be viewed here. New employees are typically hired into Level 1 or Level 2 salaries with opportunities for raises coming every six months–December and June–after the completion of the initial review period. In addition to salary, Ballotpedia offers bonuses based on performance and a $6,000 annual benefits stipend, which may be used to pay for a full benefits package, including health, vision and dental insurance; retirement accounts; and more. If benefits are not elected, the $6,000 stipend is taxed as regular income and added to the employee’s salary.
